GET TO KNOW YOUR POST PROGRAM.

Did you know that there is a new program among all Arizona American Legion Posts called “Get To Know Your Post”  This is an interesting and innovative way of inviting all Legion members to visit other Posts and possibly win some money at the same time.  The way it works is you buy a sheet and cards that has all the Posts who are participating, along with a map to each of these Posts.  You take your sheet and card to a participating post and the Bartender stamps it with a special stamp.  Once you get five stamps on the first card you move on to the next card, and so on.  Anytime before 15 October 2012 you send in  your sheet and as many cards as you have completed.  The more cards the better your chances of winning one of the cash prizes ($100.00, $200.00, $300.00, $400.00 and $1000.00).

You do not have to be on a motorcycle to participate.  This is open to all Legionnaires, Sons, and Auxillary.  The drawing will be at the American Legion State Conference in October 2012.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO WIN.  Our post makes $5.00 for each sheet sold and the money stays at our post.  All the money the organizers make from this event goes to the Veterans Rehabilitation Centers in Arizona.

You can get a sheet from the Post 24 Bartender.

USS IOWA FINDS A NEW HOME

The WWII battleship USS IOWA has left its’ mothball mooring in Suisun Bay, California. After a brief stop in Richmond, California for exterior cleanup and painting, it will be moved to its’ new assignment as a museum in Los Angeles.  This WWII era battleship’s speed, armor and 16 inch guns earned its name as “The Big Stick” of the US Navy.  The Iowa, the lead ship in its class of the biggest, fastest, and most powerful battleships, is also the last battleship to find a permanent spot for retirement.  Its’ sister ships are also museums:  the Missouri is in Pearl Harbor, the Wisconsin is in Norfolk, VA, and the New Jersey is in Camden.  The Navy no longer has battleships in its’ fleet.

The USS Iowa had a storied history in World War II, Korea, and more recent conflicts, but is perhaps best known today for the 1989 explosion that killed 47 sailors and sparked a long, disputed inquiry into the case.  After first blaming one of the dead sailors of deliberately causing the explosion, the Navy was forced by Congress to reopen the investigation. Evidence of the potential for an accidental gunpowder explosion led the Navy to reverse its finding and apologize to the Sailor’s family.  Veterans who served on the ship hope it will be remembered for other reasons,.

The USS Iowa was commissioned in February 1943, and deployed to the Atlantic and then the Pacific.  President Roosevelt traveled on it en route to meet British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Leader Josef Stalin.  The Navy installed an elevator and bathtub for Roosevelt, who used a wheelchair.  It is the only battleship equipped with a bathtub.  The ship weighs 45,000 tons, is 887 feet long and 108 feet wide.  It could travel at speeds up to 38 mph and displaced 38 feet of water.  The USS Iowa was retired and sent to storage in 2001, but now has a second career.

HELPFUL HINTS

MONSOON OVER - COOLERS OUT - TIME TO WASH WINDOWS!  Try This:

1/3 cup corn starch, 6 cups hot water

Dissolve corn starch in hot water. Liquid will be milky. Apply to window with small cloth - wipe with dry cloth (not paper). Stand back and take a bow.

NOTE: If you drip solution on other surfaces it will leave a white spot which will come up with a clean wet cloth. Also great for mirrors and vehicle windows.
(Compliments of Jim and Mary Jo Burns)

DID YOU KNOW?  WHY TO WE HAVE A TWENTY-ONE-GUN SALUTE?  Why not a six-gun or a ten-gun salute?  Well the answer is simple.  One signer of the Declaration of Independence, Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, was a notorious doodler.  After his death, a story was written about his doodling.  Hopkinson, late in 1776, was toying with the year “1776”, a famous one in American history.  He finally came up with the idea of adding the figures across and found that they totaled twenty-one.  He then said to himself, “Why not a twenty-one-gun salute for the presidents?” He submitted his idea to members of Congress, who like and approved it.  It has been in use ever since
